Heavy Haul OTR Driver


The OTR Driver (Over the Road Driver) is responsible for, but not limited to operating tractor trailer combination to transporting heavy equipment, supplies and accessories between internal and external jobsites, dealerships, and auction locations.

KEY FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Safely load and unload heavy equipment such as excavators, rock trucks, dump trucks, dozers, and various heavy equipment accessories on to and off 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 13  axle lowboy (RGN) trailers. 
  • Safely operate tractor-trailer combination with load on state and federal highway systems, through local traffic, high volume traffic, and open road situations.
  • Properly track and document activity log.
  • Report any issues or incidents to Mobilization Supervisor.           
  • Inspect tractor-trailer before and after trip.
  • Daily pre-shift vehicle and equipment inspections; maintain daily log.
  • The operator is expected to use their experience and judgment to make good driving decisions.
  • Read and interpret equipment operators’ manuals.
  • Inspect, clean, and perform minor repairs to equipment using hand tools and/or report malfunctions to Mobilization Supervisor.
  • Perform daily safety checks and required fluid checks, filter checks, etc.
  • Work in areas of uneven terrain.
  • Read and comprehend site-specific rules, maintenance instructions, and training manuals.
  • Maintains Company vehicle in a clean and orderly state inside and out at all times.
  • Represents Saiia by presenting a positive image to internal and external customers and vendors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Ability to load and unload various types of heavy equipment used in the construction industry on to and off 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 13 axle lowboy (RGN) trailers.
  • Familiar with FMCSA and DOT regulations, permitting and routing.
  • Mechanical knowledge and ability preferred.
  • Must have a sense of responsibility for the safety of the public, the work crew, self, and all other employees.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Adheres to all company, client, and project policies, procedures, standards, including but not limited to the safety manual, and the employee handbook.
  • Approach and complete work in a meticulous, thorough and timely manner.
  • Must maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to work as an individual contributor and as a part of a team.
  • Ability to use email, smart phone, tablet, or computer to manage company information and documents.
  • Must be able to maintain acceptable attendance standards 

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: 

  • High school education or G.E.D required.
  • Minimum of five years over the road driving experience, heavy wrecker experience, construction-based equipment mobilization, or a suitable combination of each.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and vibration.
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures– hot and cold.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

 LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Must have and maintain a valid state issued CDL Class A-Driver’s License with driving record that meets Saiia’s risk management guidelines.

 TRAVEL:

  •  This position reports to Mobilization at the Corporate office and may be required to travel locally 50% of the time and out of town 50% of the time

  • Sits: Frequently 2.5 - 5.5 hours daily
  • Stands: Occasionally .25 - 2.5 hours daily
  • Walks: Occasionally .25 - 2.5 hours daily
  • Drive: Continuously 5.5 - 8 hours daily
  • Lift/Carry 0-10 lbs.: Occasionally .25 - 2.5 hours daily
  • Lift/Carry 10-20 lbs.: Occasionally .25 - 2.5 hours daily
  • Lift/Carry 20-50 lbs.: Occasionally .25 - 2.5 hours daily
  • Lift/Carry 50- over 100 lbs.: Never
  • Reach Above: Occasionally .25 - 2.5 hours daily
  • Bend/Stoop: Occasionally .25 - 2.5 hours daily
  • Use Hands for Pushing/Pulling: Occasionally .25 - 2.5 hours daily
  • Use Hands for Manipulations: Occasionally .25 - 2.5 hours daily
  • Stress Level of Job: Moderate
